With hearts filled with gratitude and faith, we celebrate the life of Norman Foster Haines, a cherished father, devoted soldier, and esteemed system administrator, who transitioned to his heavenly home on March 21, 2024. Norman’s life journey began on June 6, 1939, in Mount Kisco, NY – the youngest of 5 children born to Rose Ann and Kenneth Robert – and he was subsequently raised in Newark, NJ where he learned courage, discipline and compassion.
Throughout his earthly pilgrimage, Norman exemplified unwavering loyalty and valor. Rising from humble beginnings to the esteemed rank of Sergeant First Class (E7) in the U.S. Army, he served his country for twenty years with honor, distinction, and two separate tours in Vietnam. Norman’s service was a testament to his bravery and sacrifice, earning him accolades such as the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
Beyond his military service, Norman embraced a new chapter in civilian life, where he leveraged his Army-learned computer software skills, especially in Cobol and with the IBM 360, to become a tri-state recognized system administrator. His dedication and expertise left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the industry at large, reflecting the wisdom and talent bestowed upon him by a loving Creator.
Norman leaves behind a large and cherished family – his children Randy (wife Wendy), Susan, Kenneth (wife Leah), and Ashlie Haines; Shawn Jackson (wife Michelle); his grandchildren Sarah-Marie, Rachel, Elisabeth, Holly, Reagan, Foster, and Jarvis; along with 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter – who all loved him dearly through every joy and challenge.
A ceremony to celebrate Norman’s life and service will be held at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 2:00 pm. Family, friends, and fellow servicemen are invited to gather in gratitude and remembrance to honor the life of a remarkable man who touched so many with his humor, kindness, wisdom, and faith.
As we bid farewell to Norman Foster Haines, we do so with hearts uplifted in prayer and thankfulness. May his spirit find eternal rest in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father, and may his significant legacy endure through the wonderful memories shared by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. Rest in peace, our Stormin’ Norman, for your life of service and devotion will forever inspire and guide us. Amen.
