Shirley Barbour left a message on September 21, 2025:
Shirley Barbour I and the entire Maxie family, would like to extend our sincere condolence to the Bland and extended family members. I will not be able to join you during the celebration ceremony at the St Paul Cemetery, but pray God's continued strength and comfort. Bennie was certainly a gentle person and we grew up together. But let me tell you one thing, he would fight off the "Atlanta Girls" in a heart beat when it came to me. Yes, he and my brother Ray Maxie stood at the door of Bus 59 as I had to run to the bus most evenings during elementary school. Gentle is the one word that comes to mind to describe Bennie, but let me tell you, you just knew not to "rub him the wrong way" and back then, bus 59 with Mr. Z. Matthews was our place to be and we looked forward to seeing each other and took care of each other. I recall the days that Bennie would sometimes take ill on the bus and his sisters, cousins, and the rest of us were there to assist him (we were probably just in the way of his sisters) but the Bivins community was ONE FAMILY! Also, those who knew Bennie can tell you that he would sometimes tell you to "get out of my face" or "go on" in a gentle way before he would "give you a hug"....🤣 Bennie knew exactly when the mailman would delivery mail at the post office EVERDAY😀 Family, God bless and keep you!
